Professor Sir Simon Schama is a University Professor of Art History and History and a broadcaster.
He was born in Marylebone, London in 1945, and in 1956 he won a scholarship to the private Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Cricklewood.
He then studied history at Christ's College where he was taught by J. H. Plumb. He graduated from with a Starred First in 1966.
He went on to teach history at Christ’s from 1966 to 1976. From there he went to Brasenose College, Oxford from 1976 to 1980 and then to teach art history and history at Harvard between 1980 and 1993.
He then made the move to Columbia. He has also taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and has delivered the George Macaulay Trevelyan Lectures at Cambridge, the Tanner Lectures at both Harvard and Oxford, the Finzi-Contini Lecture at Yale and the Andrew Mellon Lectures on the Visual Arts at the National Gallery in Washington.
